Recently named one of the new "wonders of the world" This Mayan site is fully excavated and packed with bus loads of tourists. Unlike many of the other sites there are no jungles, monkeys or any other wildlife for that matter and, you can not climb... or even touch the ruins... and it is expensive. But all that said, if you get there in the morning, before the heat and the crowds, you can still say you have been to Chichen Itza. Our favorite Mayan sites on the peninsula are Becan and Calakmul, both located in the state of Campeche. No people, lots of animals and ruins still covered in jungle.
