Thank you. Everyone has heard of 'calamari,' some may have even tried cooked octopus, but very few have taken one step further. I have wanted to try 'San-Nak-Ji', or live baby octopus, since the moment I was told about it. We found a suitable restaurant near my old apartment in Yeongtong, Suwon and away we went. For 30,000 KRW, or just over 25 US dollars, you get three baby octopuses and a slew of side dishes. How they're prepared... is up to you. We chose variety: one alive and well, one freshly cut (still squirming on your plate), and one cooked in soup. They are tasty, but thorough chewing is important. Korean tradition is to wrap them around chopsticks, chew quickly and just swallow- folklore tells of boosting strength and stamina. The tentacles are difficult though, and present a choking hazard. Reportedly, a number of people choke to death every year when suction cups get hold of the esophagus and don?t let go. With common sense and careful chewing, however, it's not a problem. If you're interested in octopus, and okay with the extraordinary- Yeongtong, Suwon, South Korea is the place to do it. -30-
